Thando Walbaum was born on September 8, 1985, in Hamburg, Germany.
He is the son of musicians Bethina Walbaum and Dumasani Mabaso.
His mother is German, while his father is a South African of Zulu descent.
He has two older half-brothers in South Africa.
He grew up in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel district and still lives there today.
He also spends time in South Africa.
Walbaum had his first TV role for Studio Hamburg in 1999 in an episode of the children's series *Die Pfefferkörner*.
In the movie *Emil und die Detektive*, he played Hassouna.
In 2005, he got his first leading role in the film adaptation of the book *Neger, Neger, Schornsteinfeger!* with Veronica Ferres.
He played the role of real-life Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi as a mixed-race teenager in Nazi Germany.
The film was nominated for the Golden Camera.
In 2013 he played the drummer Lukas in the feature film *Systemfehler - Wenn Inge tanzt*.
In 2015-2016 he appeared as Amar Akram in 45 episodes of *Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten*.
Walbaum also plays drums and percussion professionally, performing together with his parents with the musical group *Dube* which focuses on traditional South African township music.

The ambitious punk rocker Max and the eco-activist Inge cannot stand each other, ever since Max publicly exposed her by singing the offensive song "When Inge is Dancing" in front of the whole school. But for Max and his classmates Fabio, Joscha and Lukas this song in particular has become a real hit at school as well as in the regional music scene: Their band called Systemfehler is on the verge of a breakthrough. But just before the important gig, which could get them a record deal, guitarist Josha is injured and can't play. Inge happens to be an excellent guitarist, and the only person who can fill in at such short notice. But when Max asks for her help, she imposes one non-negotiable condition: If she decides to play with the band, they will not perform the song "Wenn Inge tanzt".

The twelve-year-old Emil and his father are haunted by bad luck. To take a break from a series of family disasters, Emil is allowed to spend a few days with a friend of the family, the female priest Hummel in Berlin. In the train he runs across the slick Max Grundeis who anaesthetizes Emil and steals his savings of 1500 DM. When he finally arrives in Berlin, Emil and a gang of street kids, led by the cheeky girl Pony Hütchen, try to find the gangster, who haunts the posh Hotel Adlon as a hotel thief. Meanwhile, to prevent anyone from finding out about Emil's mishap, Gypsi, a member of the gang of kids, passes himself off as Emil, thus wreaking havoc on the home of the priest.
