Sappho Notara (Vissani, Ioannina, April 13, 1907 – Athens, June 11, 1985) was a Greek film and theater actress.
Her real surname was Handanou.
She studied at the Professional Theater School and the Drama School of the Piraeus Association.
She got the surname Notara from the street where the drama school she attended was located.
Se made his debut in the theater and collaborated with the greatest actors of the time (Marika Kotopoulis, Katerina Andreadis, Christoforo Nezer, Elli Lambeti, Dimitri Horn).
She also appeared in several motion pictures.
Her commanding voice will be unforgettable:
"Her physiognomy, her thunderous hoarse voice and her inner exuberance helped her to create a strictly personal comic type, which she supported with particular success".
Among her performances is a song with lyrics by Jean-Paul Sartre and music by Manos Hadjidakis, entitled "On Blamando Street".
Her swan song was her collaboration with the latter, in "Pornografia", in 1981.
She also became famous through her lines, such as "Sodom and Gomorrah are happening in here" and "Burlotto".
She left an era with her performances in the films Ah, this woman of mine, The Card Player, Pornography and Mrs.
Kyriaki (the latter was a radio production by Kostas P.
Panagiotopoulos).
She was close friends with the painter Yiannis Tsarouchis and the writer Kostas Takhtsis.
A professor asks two poor students of law to steal, for a fee, a rare figurine from the house of a collector. After the successful outcome of the theft, the professor dies from joy, and the two students decide to return the figurine to its owner. There they meet his daughters, to whom they tell numerous lies. In the end, it is revealed that the whole thing was part of a wager between the professor and the collector, and the two students fall in love with the latter's daughters.
As Pelopidas is going around hungry, trying to find something to eat, a misunderstanding makes him seem like a thief. In order to escape his persecutors, he runs trying to hide. He hitchhikes and gets a ride by a truck, whose driver happens to be his fellow villager who knows the runaway’s past. Pelopidas has been working hard since his childhood, but due to his naivety nobody is serious with him. His return to the village where was born gets him mixed up in more trouble.
This film is a social comment of the times, exploring issues that centre around relationships and what was allowed and what was not allowed at the time (early 60s) in Greece. There are sub-plots also, mainly relating to the life of the poor city dwellers, social injustice and seeming double standards. Aliki Vougiouklaki is a poor young girl dreaming of a better life and the "handsome prince on a white stallion" who will deliver her from her miserable existence. She meets and falls in love with a young man (Nikos Kourkoulos) who also falls in love with her, but things are not as simple as they first seem. His past comes to haunt them with tragic consequences. Vassilis Diamantopoulos is excellent as the half-crazed old captain whose life strangely echoes that of young Aliki.
A poor neighborhood of Athens, Asyrmatos, is the center of the world for the people who live there and try in every way to escape from poverty and destitution. A handsome released youth, Ricos (Alekos Alexandrakis), is trying to make money, at the same time that his lover, Stefi (Aliki Georgoulis), is seeing other men and her father, Nekrophoras (Manos Katrakis), is trying to contribute in family finances. Rico will set up a job, but will spend the money raised before he can put it into action. As a result, one of his "partners" (Alekos Petsos) will commit suicide, leaving his pregnant wife, Eleni (Aleka Paizis), to her fate. Rikos, his beloved and her father, defeated and disappointed because of the expectations that were never fulfilled, will be forced to come to terms with the harsh reality.
On the square of a village on a beautiful greek island there are two competing tavernas. One belongs to Aspasia and the other to Anargyros, who is a former Sergeant Major of the Greek Army.
