Anton is a teenage boy living with his father in the Norwegian countryside. When his father's mental health deteriorates, the local physician suggests that Anton's mother, who left them both many years ago, should take care of him. Anton, who resents his mother, struggles against the authority of his elders and also tries to help out an old neighbor and friend.

The play opens in the study at Hakon Werle's house during a dinner party for the return of Werle's son, Gregers, from the Hoidal mines. Gregers has not come home for fifteen years. Old Ekdal appears before two servants, begging to be let into the office. Ekdal was an army officer and partner to Werle until a forestry scandal sent him to prison over some scandal. He now works as one of Werle's copyists.
We meet the young violinist Øyvind Dahl at a time when everything has weighed him down and he is completely desperate for alcohol. He has left his wife and children and has teamed up with emaciated artists and suspicious individuals, and obtains his daily liquor by mortgaging his last possessions, even the wedding ring, and by pitifully barring money.
Claus, an unhappy 28 year old Norwegian insurance company employee quits his job in Oslo and heads for Sweden in order to figure out who he really is. In his travels he meets and falls in love with Liss, a liberated small town woman, but they both have trouble considering a long-term commitment which will curtail their treasured freedom. After separating, Claus heads north and joins a surveying team, where he finds himself attracted to a country girl. Will the big city boy settle down in the rugged wilds of the Northlands, or will he return to the south and negotiate a commitment to Liss.
Petter and Kari meet, fall in love, and get married. But it's not easy for a young couple of limited means to find a place to live. Moving in with Petter's parents proves impossible, Kari can't endure her mother-in-law's constant interference. Trying to build a house of their own is halted by so much red tape, and affordable rentals is hard to come by. When Kari gets pregnant things doesn't get any easier.
