A six-year-old girl (Maryam) who has lost her family in the war, is living in an orphanage. She likes a woman called Fereshteh who lives in a house in front of the orphanage. A family (Nasrin and her husband) adopts her and takes her to the north of Iran. Maryam tries to write to Fereshteh and in a proper situation escapes home to reach her.
A young employee named Mehraban who is unhappy with his hard life meets a mysterious old man dressed in black. The old man says he will get Mehraban what he wants on the condition that he make the right use of his opportunities. Mehraban agrees. The old man leaves a newspaper with him dated three months in the future reporting the war between Iran and Iraq. Mehraban makes a lot of money by purchasing essential goods, hoarding them and then selling them later at much higher prices during the war. However he loses his fiancee and breaks with his friends. The mysterious old man appears again. He tells him he has abused his privileged opportunity and not to continue on the wrong path; on their last meeting he tells him he has become a monster and he must either to go back to his former life or die. The fear of death causes Mehraban to donate his illegitimate funds to charities and return to his honorable life.
A young man is released from prison. Three other prisoners who where his cellmates explain his political and social life in three different ways: The first one defines him as the son of an unknown father and a Polish mother who were taken abroad when his mother has been killed at the time of WWII and then he has returned to Iran as the agent of Zionists arrested while he was spying. The second one defines him as the lover of a Polish woman who is the wife of an embassy employee and is arrested through a report by the husband. The third one tells that he has returned to the country to take his wife's jewelry and is arrested mistakenly.
On his holiday, Mr. Hieroglyph wakes up tumultuous and goes to the office. He sees some signs on the screen of his computer written in hieroglyph. He goes to the central library to discover the lines. He finds a thesis his daughter has written when she was a student. By using the thesis, he reviews the story of his daughter. In the past years, she has gone to the factories and then was assigned by a political group to organize a group of mine workers to fight. Recommendations made by the girl and her friends are opposed to the opinions of the leaders. The girl distributes a leaflet on behalf of the workers which results in a disturbance. She escapes and after a while she is killed in a street struggle.
This film, based on a well-known novel of the same name by Sadegh Chooback, is about a wronged man seeking revenge. Director Amir Naderi's inspiration for making the film was one of his childhood heroes, the legendary Zar Mohammad, who waged a one-man war against four swindlers and provoked wide spread popular sentiment against tyranny.
Forging with his wife, Gladam, is planted and planted in a piece of land away from the city.
