It’s summer in Budapest, high school student Abel is struggling to focus on his final exams, whilst coming to the realisation that he is hopelessly in love with his best friend Janka. The studious Janka has her own unrequited love with married history teacher Jakab—who had a previous confrontation with Abel’s conservative father. The tensions of a polarised society come unexpectedly to the surface when Abel’s history graduation exam turns into a national scandal.
The roads leading out of the city are closed. There is a curfew. Dead bodies litter the deserted streets. Shops are empty. So are many houses, because their inhabitants fled while they could. Matthew has stayed behind to care for his sick mother, who is suffering from some mysterious illness. One day, the unexpected happens: Matthew's long-lost father, who had left the family, turns up. He wants to get his son out of the town, whose days are numbered.
1979. Gábor H. works in a law enforcement institution. He robs a bank branch, gets into jail. 1989. Gábor H. and the similarly unemployed Sanyi want to get money by robbing.
